Does protesting and forming petitions and whatnot really make a difference?

I don't think so. Here in Salt Lake City the LDS church had tons and tons of protestors around the temples with signs supporting that whole gay marriage thing going on in california (the church does not support it) and it didn't change a single church leader's mind. So what is your opinion?
