How can I fix my iPod Touch?

I have a 2nd generation iPod touch, and it works perfectly except the Sleep/Wake on is completely useless. It's not stuck or jammed as I can still press it, but it won't function in any way. It is really inconvenient because without it, I cannot turn my iPod on or off without connecting to the computer, and the battery dies really fast, as I can't turn the screen off. It is not water damage, and I tried to jailbreak it but I can't get it to go into DFU mode without the Sleep/Wake on. How can I reset/restore my iPod without it? Please help me?
